The toms are finally starting to come in, but as you can see they are tiny little things, the largest being about the size of an espresso cup. A sad sight it is. Anyone know how to make tomatoes grown in containers bigger?

You're so lucky that you still have tomatoes coming in. Our plants are kaput!
ReplyDeleteIt's been such a cold summer, this is the BEGINNING of our harvest.
ReplyDeleteOur tomato harvest was delayed significantly this season, and everything then ripened at once. It was strange harvesting early cherry tomatoes and late season heirlooms together. Darned Bay Area weather. I'm glad you're finally getting some that are ripe though. We grew ours in containers before the gardens were installed this year. They're never their best in containers, but I think sometimes its part luck, the right variety, the right summer conditions, and careful attention to consistent watering and feeding to produce tomatoes of any size in containers. I expect yours might have been larger this year if our weather hadn't been so out of sorts! They look delicious though!
ReplyDeleteThanks Curbstone. They ARE delicious. I am a horrible waterer though. Next year, I'm contemplating a giant cold frame in the windy backyard for toms and cukes.
ReplyDeleteHotter summer with more sun.
ReplyDeleteThe tomatoes that I managed to cover with heavy-duty mesh before the stupid squirrels got to them are getting big (baseball size). I stirred in an organic pellet fertilizer before planting and watered them every two to three weeks with a seaweed fertilizer. Oh, and put all my egg shells into the pot.
ReplyDeleteI almost exclusively container garden, and I was able to grow full-size Celebrity and Brandywine tomatoes in containers this year. You can still find pics on my site at http://thealchemistblog.wordpress.com. My experience thus far has been--the bigger the container, the bigger the fruit. I used 41 quart plastic garbage bins this year, with holes drilled into the bottom. Let me know if you have any questions!
